Aloha, ʻOhana!

In a world that moves faster every day, where screens dominate our attention and traditions can feel like has-beens of the past, we face a critical question: How do we keep Hawaiian culture alive in the hearts of our youth? More importantly, how do we make it relevant, exciting, and essential to their lives?

The answer is simpler than you might think. We invite them in. We show them that Hawaiian culture is not just about the past—it is about who they are today and who they will become tomorrow.

The Power of Cultural Connection

Hawaiian culture is built on values that transcend time: aloha (love and compassion), kuleana (responsibility), mālama (care for one another and the land), and ʻohana (family). These are not abstract concepts. They are lived experiences that shape how we treat each other, how we navigate challenges, and how we find our place in the world.

When our youth engage with Hawaiian culture, they are not just learning dances or songs. They are discovering their identity, building confidence, and connecting with a community that sees, values, and believes in them. They learn that they are part of something bigger than themselves—a lineage of strength, resilience, and aloha that stretches back generations.

Research shows that youth who are connected to their cultural heritage experience higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and stronger mental health. They have a sense of belonging that protects them from the isolation and uncertainty that so many young people face today. Culture is not a luxury. It is a lifeline.

Why Youth Involvement Matters

Our youth are not just the future of Hawaiian culture—they are the present. They bring fresh perspectives, boundless energy, and a hunger to make their mark. When we involve them in cultural activities, we are not just preserving traditions; we are evolving them.

Youth involvement ensures that Hawaiian culture remains dynamic and relevant. They remix traditional chants with modern beats. They use social media to share the beauty of hula with the world. They ask hard questions about what it means to be Hawaiian in a multicultural society, and in doing so, they deepen our understanding of our own heritage.

But here is the truth: youth will not show up if we do not create spaces for them. They need opportunities that meet them where they are—activities that are fun, meaningful, and accessible. They need mentors who listen, encourage, and challenge them. They need to see themselves reflected in the stories we tell and the leaders we celebrate.

How We Can Get Our Youth More Involved

So, how do we do it? How do we inspire our youth to embrace Hawaiian culture with the same passion and pride that we do? Here are some ways we can make it happen:

Create Youth-Led Initiatives. Give young people ownership over projects, events, and programs. Let them plan a cultural festival, design a social media campaign, or lead a workshop. When they have a stake in the outcome, they show up with enthusiasm and commitment.

Make It Social. Youth crave connection. Organize group activities like beach cleanups, potlucks, or game nights that blend cultural learning with fun. When they associate Hawaiian culture with friendship and joy, they will keep coming back.

Use Technology to Our Advantage. Meet youth where they spend their time—online. Share short videos teaching Hawaiian phrases, post behind-the-scenes content from cultural events, or create interactive challenges that encourage participation. Make Hawaiian culture accessible with a click.

Celebrate Their Contributions. Recognize and honor the work that youth do. Feature their art, stories, and ideas in newsletters, on social media, and at community events. When they see that their voices matter, they will use them more boldly.

Provide Mentorship and Role Models. Pair youth with mentors who can guide them, inspire them, and show them what is possible. Highlight young leaders who are making a difference in the Hawaiian community. Representation matters.

Make It Relevant to Their Lives. Connect Hawaiian values to the challenges youth face today—navigating identity, dealing with stress, building healthy relationships, pursuing their dreams. Show them that Hawaiian culture offers wisdom and tools for living a meaningful life.

A Call to Action

To our youth: We need you. Your energy, your creativity, your questions, and your dreams are what will carry Hawaiian culture forward. You do not have to be an expert. You do not have to know every chant or dance, every hula. You have to show up, be curious, and be yourself. Your voice matters. Your presence matters. You belong here.

To our ʻohana: Let us commit to making space for our youth. Let us listen to them, learn from them, and support them. Let us create opportunities that invite them in rather than gatekeep. Let us remember that culture is not something we preserve in a museum—it is something we live, breathe, and pass on with open hands and open hearts.
