Today, I want to talk about something that's been on my mind lately, a sort of unspoken rule of sisterhood that I think we need to re-examine.
There's this idea floating around, sometimes called the "fight club for women," that we have to have each other's backs, no matter what. That we're a monolithic army that must present a united front at all times. And while the sentiment of solidarity is beautiful and necessary, I think this interpretation of "girl code" can be problematic.
It can pressure us into a corner, making us feel like we have to defend every woman, in every situation, even when we don't have all the facts. Even when we have no personal connection to the people involved. This pressure for blind allegiance, for automatic support, can be just as stifling as the societal pressures we've fought so hard to escape.
True support, in my opinion, is thoughtful. It's nuanced. It's about listening, about seeking to understand, and about making informed decisions about where we lend our voices and our energy. It's not about blindly jumping into every fight. It's about choosing our battles, and more importantly, choosing how we fight them.
We can support women without having to defend all women. We can stand for the principle of equality and justice without feeling obligated to vouch for every individual. Our solidarity is a powerful force, and we should wield it with intention and wisdom, not as a knee-jerk reaction.
Let's cultivate a sisterhood that is based on mutual respect, critical thinking, and genuine connection, not on an unspoken obligation to have each other's backs, right or wrong.
