Today, I want to talk about a fairytale we’ve been sold since we were little girls, a myth that’s been amplified a thousand times over in the age of social media: the idea of finding "the perfect one."
We see it everywhere, don't we? Perfectly curated anniversary posts, cinematic proposal videos, and endless couple goals hashtags. Our feeds are a highlight reel of other people's relationships, and it can subconsciously build an impossible checklist in our minds. He has to be this tall, have this job, be this romantic, this adventurous, this emotionally available... the list goes on. It’s a gentle reality check we all need: we’re chasing a fantasy, and it might be costing us a real, and beautiful, love.
This relentless pursuit of perfection in a partner is often a reflection of our own insecurities. It’s easier to focus on finding a flawless person than it is to do the hard work of self-reflection. To ask ourselves: Am I the person I want to be? Am I bringing my best self to the table? What are my own imperfections that I need to embrace? True partnership isn’t about two perfect people finding each other; it’s about two imperfect people choosing to build a life together, flaws and all.
There is such profound beauty in imperfection. It’s in the way he snores a little too loud, or the way she’s always five minutes late. It’s in the disagreements that lead to deeper understanding and the struggles that you overcome together. These are the things that make a relationship real, that weave the fabric of a shared life. A perfect, polished love has no room for growth, no space for grace, no story to tell.
So, let’s make a pact to let go of the checklist. Let’s trade the fantasy of perfection for the reality of a person who sees our imperfections and loves us not in spite of them, but because of them. Let’s fight for a love that is real, not one that is just ready for the camera.
What are your thoughts on the pressure to find the “perfect” partner?
With love,
