In partnership with

Our last newsletter post led to a really important question that many of you asked: If we throw out the checklist, how do we know when someone is genuinely right for us, imperfections and all?

It’s a subtle shift in perspective, moving from inspection to intuition. When we’re stuck in checklist mode, we’re so busy ticking boxes that we can miss the actual connection. But when we let that go, we can start to pay attention to what really matters. For me, it comes down to a few foundational feelings.

First, and most importantly: you feel safe. Not just physically safe, but emotionally safe. You can show them the messy, unpolished, vulnerable parts of yourself without fear of judgment or rejection. You don’t have to perform or pretend. Being with them feels like coming home.

Second, your core values are in sync. You might have different hobbies, different tastes in music, or different ways of loading the dishwasher, but when it comes to the big things—what you believe in, how you treat people, what you want out of life—you’re on the same page. This is the bedrock that you build a life on.

Another key sign is that they are your biggest cheerleader, not your competition. They celebrate your wins, they encourage your growth, and they aren’t intimidated by your light. They see your potential and want to see you thrive, even in the areas where you’re still a work in progress.

Finally, look at how you navigate conflict. Every relationship has it. But with the right person, disagreements are opportunities for growth, not battles to be won. You can have tough conversations with respect and come out on the other side feeling heard and more connected.

Recognizing the right person isn’t about finding someone without flaws. It’s about finding the person whose flaws you can live with, whose strengths complement your own, and who makes you feel more yourself than you’ve ever been. It’s not about perfection; it’s about partnership.

How did you know your partner was the right one for you?

With love,
