I've spent years filling the void with people.
Calling them. Texting them. Reaching out. Making sure they knew I cared. Making sure they didn't forget me.
And it was exhausting.
But I didn't know what else to do with the emptiness.
The Void
There's a void inside all of us. A space that needs to be filled.
For me, it was the fear of being forgotten. The fear of being alone. The fear that if I wasn't constantly reaching out, people would realize they didn't need me.
So I filled it with people.
With constant connection. With constant reaching out. With constant performance.
And for a while, it worked. It felt like I was solving the problem.
But I wasn't. I was just numbing it.
The Cost of People-Pleasing
People-pleasing is exhausting because you're never enough.
You can call someone today, and tomorrow they might not call you back. You can show up for someone, and they might not show up for you. You can give everything, and still feel empty.
Because the void isn't about other people. It's about you.
It's about knowing your worth. It's about feeling held. It's about believing that you're enough without constantly proving it.
And no amount of people-pleasing can give you that.
The Spiritual Alternative
I'm seven days into a 21-day fast from calling people who don't reciprocate.
And I'm learning something that I didn't expect: The void can be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Not with people. Not with constant connection. But with God.
When I feel the urge to call someone, I'm learning to pray instead. When I feel the loneliness, I'm learning to sit with God instead. When I feel the fear of being forgotten, I'm learning to remember that I'm held by something bigger than people's opinions.
And the void starts to fill.
What It Feels Like
It feels different than people-pleasing.
People-pleasing is frantic. It's desperate. It's about proving something.
Spiritual connection is quiet. It's grounded. It's about being held.
When I fill the void with the Holy Spirit, I don't feel like I have to perform. I don't feel like I have to prove my worth. I just feel... held.
And that's enough.
How to Start
If you're a people-pleaser like me, here's what I'm learning:
Notice the void. Where do you feel empty? What are you trying to fill with constant reaching out?
Name the fear. What are you afraid will happen if you stop performing? If you stop being the one who always initiates?
Create space. Stop filling the void with people for a moment. Sit with the emptiness. Pray. Meditate. Connect with something bigger than yourself.
Let it fill. Don't try to force it. Just be open to being held by something bigger.
The Real Shift
The real shift isn't about not calling people. It's about learning that your worth isn't dependent on how much you reach out.
It's about learning that you can be loved without constantly performing.
It's about learning that the void can be filled with something that doesn't require you to prove anything.
And that something is spiritual connection.
For the Dual-Role Dynamo
This is especially important for those of us building empires.
Because you can't build something real if you're constantly depleted by people-pleasing.
You can't show up for your business if you're exhausted from trying to prove your worth to people.
You can't be your most strategic self if you're filling the void with the wrong things.
So fill it with the Holy Spirit. Fill it with faith. Fill it with the knowledge that you're held.
And then build from that place of fullness instead of emptiness.
The Invitation
I'm not saying cut off all your relationships. I'm not saying become a hermit.
I'm saying: Stop filling the void with people-pleasing. Start filling it with spiritual connection.
And see what happens.
See how much clearer you become. How much more grounded. How much more yourself.
See how your relationships shift when you're not desperately trying to prove your worth.
See how your business grows when you're building from a place of fullness instead of emptiness.
Where I Am
I'm seven days into a 21-day fast. I'm filled with the Holy Spirit and filled with doubt.
I'm uncertain if I can last, and I'm excited about what's next.
I'm learning that the void can be filled. And that filling it with God is different than filling it with people.
And that's changing everything.
